Oman Advances Towards Large-Scale Seaweed Farming
Researchers in Oman are launching a pilot seaweed farming project to assess the commercial viability of local species in Oman's waters.
Researchers from the Center of Excellence for Marine Biotechnology at Sultan Qaboos University, with funding from Omanβs Macroalgae Industries, have initiated a pilot seaweed farm near the Al Suwadi Islands in Barka. This project aims to evaluate the commercial feasibility of cultivating local seaweed species in Oman's marine environment. Researchers have emphasized that this initiative represents a strategic step towards developing a sustainable blue economy hinged on marine biotechnology and aquaculture innovations.
The principal investigator, Dr. Khalid Khalifa Al-Sabahi, explained that the blue economy is an economic concept centered on the sustainable use of marine resources to achieve economic growth and create job opportunities while preserving marine ecosystems. The blue economy encompasses various sectors, including aquaculture, seaweed cultivation, marine biotechnology industries, environmental tourism, and renewable energy sourced from seas. This multifaceted approach not only aims to enhance economic activities but also underscores the importance of minimizing environmental impacts.
Several coastal nations are pursuing the development of the blue economy sector due to its potential to provide employment opportunities and support sustainable practices. As Oman embarks on this seaweed farming initiative, it aligns with global trends seeking to harness marine resources responsibly, indicating a commitment to innovation and sustainability in its economic strategies.
