Court to re-arraign ex-Gov Lamido and sons on April 1 for N1.35bn fraud

The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled a new arraignment for former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and his two sons concerning a N1.35 billion money laundering case.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has set April 1 for the re-arraignment of Sule Lamido, a former governor of Jigawa State, and his two sons, Aminu and Mustapha, in connection with a major money laundering allegation amounting to N1.35 billion. The case, which is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), also implicates two companies associated with the Lamido family, Bamaina Holdings Ltd and Speeds International Ltd.

The court proceedings were delayed due to the absence of the defendants, for which their counsel, Joe Agi (SAN), expressed regret, citing a late notification of the court session as the reason for their non-appearance. He clarified that Lamido and his sons were residing in Kano and could not arrive in Abuja on such short notice. Furthermore, Agi committed to ensuring that the defendants would be present at the next scheduled court date.

Counsel for the EFCC, Chile Okoroma (SAN), expressed incredulity at the absence of the defendants despite being formally notified of the proceedings. This ongoing trial is significant in Nigeria's efforts to combat corruption and enforce accountability among public officials, highlighting the importance of judicial processes in addressing allegations of high-profile financial misconduct.
