Ig Nobel Awards will no longer be held in America
The Ig Nobel Awards ceremony will now take place in Zurich instead of the USA due to safety concerns for attendees.
The 36th annual Ig Nobel Awards ceremony, organized by the digital magazine 'Annals of Improbable Research,' will be held in Zurich this year, a significant departure from its traditional venue in the United States. This event, renowned for celebrating humorous and thought-provoking research, usually occurs in September, just weeks before the official Nobel Prize announcements. However, this year, the organizers decided to relocate the event amidst growing concerns about the safety of their guests traveling to the United States.
In an interview with Associated Press, ceremony host and magazine editor Marc Abrahams explained that guests had expressed concerns about traveling to the US due to the perceived safety issues surrounding immigration policies under former President Donald Trump's administration. The decision to move the event reflects broader criticisms of the US immigration system, particularly regarding the treatment of international attendees, including new laureates and journalists, during an era of strict immigration enforcement and deportations targeting individuals on various visas.
This marks a significant shift for the Ig Nobel Awards, which for the past 35 years has invited winners to the US, where they receive their prizes amid a festive atmosphere with paper airplanes. Last year, the event included winners from Japan, showcasing its international appeal. The relocation to Zurich signals not only a logistical change but also highlights ongoing global concerns about safety and accessibility in the current political climate.
