Even after prohibition, 1 in 5 teenagers still use social media in Australia
Despite a ban on minors using social media platforms in Australia, one in five teenagers under 16 continues to access these services.
A recent report reveals that one-fifth of Australian adolescents under the age of 16 are still using social media platforms like TikTok and Snapchat, even after a ban was enacted prohibiting them from accessing these services. This data, gathered two months post-implementation of the law, raises questions about the effectiveness of the age verification mechanisms that were meant to restrict access to underage users. Comparatively, there has been a decrease in the usage of these platforms among teenagers aged 13 to 15 between December, when the ban was instated, and February, indicating some level of compliance among the youth.
