HMRC warning to people earning more than £60,000

HMRC warns earners over £60,000 that they may need to repay all or part of their Child Benefit due to the High Income Child Benefit Charge.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued a warning targeting individuals earning over £60,000, alerting them about potential repayment obligations related to the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC). According to HMRC, parents or guardians who receive Child Benefit and earn above this threshold, either individually or through a partner, might be required to repay some or all of the benefits disbursed to them. This repayment obligation is triggered when at least one partner's income exceeds the specified limit, thereby placing the recipients under the scrutiny of the tax agency.

The HICBC not only affects those who directly receive Child Benefit but might also impact individuals if someone else claims the benefit for a child residing with them, provided that the claimant contributes equally to the child's living expenses. This warning serves as an important reminder to high-income earners to review their financial circumstances closely, as failure to comply with repayment responsibilities could lead to penalties or increased tax liabilities in the future.

In the previous tax year (2022/23), around 440,000 taxpayers were compelled to return a staggering £525 million in HICBC, highlighting the scale of the issue and the potential financial implications for high earners. HMRC’s alert emphasizes the necessity for increased awareness among families about how income levels can affect child benefit claims, and it underscores the importance of timely financial planning in relation to government support programs.
