In response to Gilmar Mendes' request, MPRJ informs about payments made to 880 prosecutors and promoters in two months

The Ministry of Public of Rio de Janeiro reported significant increases in payments to prosecutors over two months in response to a request from Supreme Court Minister Gilmar Mendes.

The Ministry of Public of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) submitted a report to Supreme Court Minister Gilmar Mendes detailing payments made to 880 prosecutors and promoters for the months of January and February 2023. Notably, the report highlights a staggering 243% increase in payments related to a specific type of leave known as 'non-enjoyed leave' or compensatory leave, which is provided to legal professionals managing high workloads or numerous cases.

In January, the total payments amounted to R$ 65.5 million, which jumped to R$ 223.6 million in February. The organization has specific compensation rules wherein for every three days of work, one day of leave accumulates, with a maximum limit of 10 days taking into account the workload. This increase in payments raises questions regarding the funding and the efficiency of the justice system, as it may imply an overload of cases that the prosecutors are handling.

By sharing this data with the Supreme Court, the MPRJ shows its transparency and accountability, but it also prompts broader discussions on public sector remuneration, particularly in the judiciary. The substantial raise in expenditures for compensatory leave underscores underlying operational challenges within the institution and invites scrutiny over how the legal processes are currently managed, ensuring that both the justice system's efficiency and its financial health are maintained.
