Franco Colapinto, the Argentine driver for Alpine, participated in his first sprint qualification of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Shanghai International Circuit during the Chinese Grand Prix. Despite facing some difficulties at the beginning of the race weekend, he managed to complete the sprint qualification, finishing in 16th place which will determine his starting position for the first of two races this weekend. In contrast, during the single free practice session, he had a slightly better performance, ending in 14th place.

The results of the sprint qualification were dominated by Mercedes, with British driver George Russell putting in a strong performance to secure pole position, followed closely by Andrea ‘Kimi’ Antonelli in second place. Both drivers had also topped the timesheets in the first practice session, showcasing Mercedes' current form.
