Expert: The War in the Middle East Affects Support for Ukraine

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East negatively impacts Ukraine's situation in the short term, though the long-term effects depend on the resolution of the conflict, according to an expert from the Latvian Institute of International Affairs.

The war in the Middle East is currently having adverse effects on Ukraine as outlined by Toms Rātfelders, a researcher at the Latvian Institute of International Affairs. He stated that due to the conflict, Gulf states are requesting air defense systems from the United States, which in turn is limiting the support that Ukraine receives. This diversion of military resources is critical as it diminishes the level of international assistance that Ukraine relies upon to combat the ongoing invasion by Russia.

Furthermore, the rising prices of oil and natural gas emanating from the conflict could exert pressure on Western nations to ease sanctions against Russia. Such a move would likely augment Russian financial resources, thereby complicating Ukraine's struggle against aggression. Rātfelders notes that any easing of sanctions could unwittingly bolster Russia's war efforts, making it imperative for Ukraine and its allies to maintain a coherent strategy in their support framework.

Rātfelders also highlighted that while the immediate impact of the Middle Eastern conflict on Ukraine is pronounced, the long-term outcomes will depend significantly on how the situation resolves. For example, he suggested that political pressure within the U.S. might lead President Donald Trump to seek a quicker resolution to the conflict in the Middle East, which could inadvertently sideline Ukrainian peace negotiations, further complicating the geopolitical landscape for Ukraine's defense and international support.
