Brussels prepares to ban the 'undressing' of real people's images using AI

EU member states are working to ban the use of artificial intelligence to generate fake naked or pornographic images of real people, as agreed upon in Brussels.

On Friday, EU member states gathered in Brussels, where they agreed on a proposal to ban the use of artificial intelligence for generating fake nude or pornographic images of real individuals. This decision stems from ongoing discussions among EU diplomats, aiming to amend the Artificial Intelligence Act. These measures reflect the EU's commitment to regulating AI technologies and ensuring the protection of individual rights in the digital landscape.

The Coreper, which is the committee of permanent representatives of the member states, discussed streamlining certain AI regulations as part of a broader digital package introduced by the European Commission last November. This package seeks to simplify administrative processes and support innovation among European companies, encompassing amendments not only related to AI but also addressing cybersecurity and data protection.

During their meeting, ambassadors focused on enhancing regulations on AI, highlighting the Cypriot presidency's priority on this matter. While the member states largely preserved the original framework proposed by the Commission, they introduced new provisions specifically aimed at prohibiting AI practices related to the creation of sexually explicit content involving real people, which signifies a push towards ethical standards in the use of AI technology.
