Political Barometer for Rhineland-Palatinate: Tight Race in Mainz

A recent poll indicates a close contest between the incumbent SPD and opposition CDU ahead of the Rhineland-Palatinate state election.

With just over a week to go before the state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate, a new poll shows a tight race between the ruling SPD and the opposition CDU. The 'Politbarometer Extra' indicates that the CDU, led by candidate Gordon Schnieder, is narrowly ahead with 28% support compared to the SPD’s 26%, which is headed by current Minister-President Alexander Schweitzer. Another pre-election survey released by ARD also reflected a slim lead for the CDU, reporting figures of 29% for the CDU against 28% for the SPD.

The results mark a significant shift from the 2021 elections when the SPD secured 35.7% compared to the CDU's 27.7%. The far-right AfD is currently the third strongest party with 19%, more than doubling its 2021 share of 8.3%. The Green Party holds a steady nine percent, nearly matching its 9.3% from the previous election. Additionally, the Free Voters and the Left Party are at the crucial five percent threshold needed for representation in the landtag, each garnering five percent in the recent poll, with the Left Party not currently holding a seat.

This polling data suggests a competitive atmosphere as the upcoming election approaches, with potential implications for the balance of power within the state. As parties strategize to sway undecided voters, the outcomes may also reflect wider national trends impacting the political landscape in Germany.
