Residents complain about possible misleading information regarding water meter verification
Latvian residents have reported complaints to the Consumer Rights Protection Centre about potentially misleading practices related to water meter verification offers.
The Consumer Rights Protection Centre (PTAC) in Latvia has received multiple complaints concerning potentially misleading commercial practices involving offers to change or verify water consumption meters in apartments. Reportedly, representatives from certain companies have been contacting property owners by phone, claiming that the validity of their water meters has expired and that these meters need to be checked or replaced. These claims have been deemed misleading, especially since the PTAC emphasizes that the requirement for periodic verification or replacement of these meters is no longer in effect.
On June 5, 2025, amendments to the regulations concerning measurement instruments required for state metrological control came into force, effectively removing the obligation for periodic verification of water consumption meters installed in apartments. According to PTAC, this regulatory change indicates that the periodic verification of water consumption meters is no longer mandatory in residential properties. Consumers have been informed that, contrary to what some companies are stating, it is unnecessary for them to incur additional costs for verification or replacement of functional meters.
This situation highlights the ongoing issue of consumer protection in Latvia, particularly in relation to communication from companies to individuals regarding compliance and obligations. The PTACβs intervention serves as a reminder for consumers to be cautious about unsolicited claims from businesses and to verify the information provided to them, especially when it concerns potential financial obligations or service requirements.
