Arsesp maintains nighttime water pressure reduction of 10 hours a day to preserve reservoir levels in SP
The São Paulo Regulatory Agency (Arsesp) is continuing a 10-hour nightly water pressure reduction to help preserve reservoir levels amid concerns about the dry season.
The São Paulo Regulatory Agency, known as Arsesp, has decided to maintain its nighttime water pressure reduction, known as the Gestão de Demanda Noturna (GDN), for 10 hours each day, running from 7 PM to 5 AM. This measure aims to preserve the levels of reservoirs crucial for water supply as the dry season approaches. Despite the Integrated Metropolitan System currently having over 52% of its storage capacity, the Cantareira System, which supplies roughly 50% of Greater São Paulo, stands at only about 39% and has not recovered as anticipated during the rainy season.
The decision to continue this water pressure reduction policy was made on October 9th, reflecting the agency's proactive approach in managing water resources. The agency reported that this measure is in place since September of the previous year and could be reassessed if there is a significant improvement in hydrological conditions, particularly with regards to the Cantareira System. The ongoing challenges posed by water availability have prompted state agencies to be vigilant in monitoring and managing resources effectively.
The implications of this decision highlight the ongoing challenges associated with water management in one of Brazil's largest cities. As the dry season approaches, maintaining adequate water supply becomes increasingly critical for residents and businesses alike. The Arsesp’s actions underscore the importance of regulatory oversight in the face of climate variability and shifting weather patterns, seeking to strike a balance between available resources and public demand for water services.
