The Ohře River will return from pipes to the channel in the Chomutov region, creating a new fishing area

The Ohře River is set to be restored from its current piped state to a natural river channel, facilitating a new fishing area in the Chomutov region.

The state enterprise Povodí Ohře plans to restore a 4.7-kilometer section of the Bíliná River, bringing it back to a more natural state after being diverted into pipes in the 1980s due to mining activities. The construction of these pipes has reached the end of its lifespan, prompting the need for this ecological restoration project. The project includes the reintroduction of meanders and ponds as well as measures to enhance the migratory pathways for fish and other wildlife inherent to the river ecosystem.

Work is expected to commence in the first half of this year, with projections indicating that aquatic life, including fish and plant species, will re-emerge within the first three years after the restoration. This initiative is significant not only for revitalizing local biodiversity but also for potentially developing a new fishing area, similar to existing locations, which could benefit local anglers and foster environmental engagement from the community. Dana Zikešová, spokesperson for Povodí Ohře, emphasized that the restoration will allow wildlife to return, enhancing the ecological health and scenic value of the area.

Additionally, the Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection will monitor the project, ensuring that the transition back to a natural watercourse adheres to environmental standards and supports sustainable practices in the region. This restoration is an example of integrating ecological restoration into regional development, showcasing a commitment to preserving and enhancing natural habitats while providing recreational opportunities for the community.
