The tradition of firing cannons in Dubai suddenly stops... Amidst the war, a centuries-old tradition is broken

The tradition of firing cannons during Iftar in Dubai has been suspended due to ongoing conflicts in the region, particularly between the US, Israel, and Iran.

In a significant shift from tradition, the custom of firing cannons during Iftar in Dubai, especially observed during the holy month of Ramadan, has been halted this year. This custom, which has been a part of Ramadan celebrations, involves firing a cannon at sunset to mark the breaking of the fast. While the ritual commenced with the sighting of the Ramadan moon, it has not continued since February 28, sparking concerns among residents and observers alike.

The suspension of this traditional practice is closely tied to the escalating tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran. As U.S. and Israeli forces have engaged in military actions against Iran, the Iranian government has retaliated by targeting U.S. military bases across the Gulf region. This ongoing conflict has raised security concerns, prompting Dubai authorities to reassess public safety measures related to the cannon fires that traditionally announce the Iftar.

Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Ameemi from Dubai Police commented on the situation, indicating that the decision to halt the cannon fire during Iftar was made with precautionary intentions in light of the war conditions. This decision reflects a broader recognition of the changing security landscape in the region, demonstrating how geopolitical tensions can impact local customs and traditions, particularly during such a significant period for the Muslim community.
