New inflation basket in Poland. GUS shows what we spend the most on
The Polish Central Statistical Office has updated the weighting system used for calculating the consumer price index based on household expenditure data for 2025.
In February, the Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS) announced an update to its weighting system, which is utilized to calculate the Consumer Price Index (CPI). This refresh is based on the current expenditure patterns of households concerning goods and services, reflecting spending data from the previous year, specifically looking ahead to 2025. This systematic refinement is crucial for accurately gauging inflation and cost of living adjustments across the nation.
According to the updated structure of household expenditure, there has been an increase in the share allocated to categories such as housing and utility usage, encompassing water and energy supplies, as well as recreation, culture, health services, insurance, and non-alcoholic beverages. This indicates a significant shift towards prioritizing essential services and quality of life expenditures, which may reflect changing consumer preferences and economic realities in Poland.
Conversely, a reduction in expenditure has been observed in areas including transport, alcoholic beverages and tobacco products, furnishings and household equipment, clothing, information and communication technologies, dining out, personal hygiene, social protection, as well as education and other goods and services. Such changes could signal a reaction to ongoing economic pressures and inflationary trends, prompting consumers to adjust their spending habits in response to their financial circumstances. This updated framework will have implications for economic policy and the understanding of consumer behavior in Poland moving forward.
