Fernet and Argentine 'cheta' cumbia: a party that gathers 300 people a night in Amsterdam
An Argentine DJ has launched a successful party in Amsterdam that captures the spirit of home for expatriates, drawing large crowds weekly despite being far from Argentina.
In Amsterdam, an Argentine-themed party known as 'Flama' has become a vibrant gathering spot, attracting around 300 attendees each night. The event channels the Argentine cultural experience with lively cumbia music, festive camaraderie, and the iconic drink Fernet circulating among party-goers, reminiscent of celebrations in Buenos Aires, CΓ³rdoba, and Rosario. This phenomenon highlights the strong connection expatriates maintain with their homeland through music and community, even while living abroad.
Daniel Paz, known as 'Pape' in the DJ scene, is the mastermind behind this unique gathering. Originally from Escobar, Argentina, and a computer science graduate from UBA, he transitioned from a programming career in Buenos Aires to pursue a more fulfilling life in the Netherlands. Pape's move in 2017 was driven by a sense of professional stagnation and a desire to embrace new experiences, as his father had established a life in Amsterdam, allowing for an easier adjustment.
The 'Flama' party not only serves as an entertainment venue but also acts as an emotional refuge for Argentines far from home, showcasing the universal themes of nostalgia and cultural identity. As it thrives in a foreign city, the event exemplifies how communities can form around shared cultural practices and experiences, providing comfort and camaraderie to those navigating life in a different country.
