You too can become Robinson Crusoe: An adventurous video game developed in Estonia aims to conquer the world

The Estonian-developed virtual reality game "Bootstrap Island" has officially launched on the Steam platform, allowing players to experience survival on a mysterious tropical island.

This week, a new virtual reality game titled "Bootstrap Island" was released on the Steam platform, developed by Maru VR in Estonia. Previously, it was accessible to players in an Early Access version. Set against the backdrop of a 17th-century shipwreck, players find themselves isolated on a mysterious tropical island and must quickly adapt to their new surroundings in order to survive, drawing inspiration from the classic tale of Robinson Crusoe.

"Bootstrap Island" is an ambitious and large-scale project within the context of Estonian gaming, having been in development for nearly four years with a team of 15 people. What makes this game particularly unique is the collaborative effort of individuals from various creative fields. For instance, all of the game's music has been composed by Estonian composer Liina Sumera, with animation director Mattias Mälk serving as the art director, and Rein Zobel, who has a background in film direction, acting as the creative director.

Notably, "Bootstrap Island" is the first Estonian game to receive support from the European Commission's Creative Europe MEDIA program. In 2024, it won the title of Best Estonian Game, signaling a significant accomplishment for the development team and the Estonian gaming industry as a whole, showcasing both local talent and creativity on an international stage.
