Mercedes drivers fastest in China Grand Prix sprint qualifying

Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli secured the first and second positions in the qualifying round for the sprint of the China Grand Prix.

In an impressive display, Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli took the top two positions during the sprint qualifying for the China Grand Prix, the second stage of the Formula 1 World Championship. Russell clocked a fast lap of one minute and 31.520 seconds, surpassing his teammate Antonelli by a margin of 0.289 seconds, securing not only pole position for the sprint but also continuing the team's strong performance following their double victory in the season's opening race last weekend.

The competition was stiff, with last season's champion Lando Norris from McLaren finishing third, 0.621 seconds behind Russell. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton from Ferrari placed fourth, followed by Oscar Piastri from McLaren and Charles Leclerc from Ferrari in fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Other notable participants included Pierre Gasly from Alpine in seventh and Max Verstappen from Red Bull in eighth, while Oliver Bearman and Isaac Hadjar from Haas and Red Bull rounded out the top ten at ninth and tenth.

The qualifying session followed an earlier practice round, which provided teams with essential data before heading into the sprint race. As the event unfolds in China, the focus will shift to the actual sprint race, where teams will aim to translate their qualifying performances into points, further intensifying the competition as the F1 season progresses.
