President Yoon visited a special school for children with developmental disabilities, emphasizing the importance of supporting both the children and their families.
On October 13, President Yoon Suk-yeol visited the Lee Eun School in Cheongju, a special education institution dedicated to children with developmental disabilities. During the visit, he acknowledged the heavy burdens faced by these children and their families, expressing a deep understanding of their struggles. Yang Jin-soo, a deputy spokesperson from the Blue House, reported that President Yoon's heartfelt statements were particularly directed at the special education teachers, encouraging them to maintain their compassion and commitment to the students.
After having discussions with parents and school officials, the President also participated in classroom activities, including musical performances with the students. This visit marked the first time a sitting president had visited this school, and the school principal noted that the President's presence was a significant source of hope and encouragement for teachers and parents alike. The Lee Eun School, which opened in 2023, serves as the first public special education institution focusing solely on intellectual disabilities for early childhood and elementary education stages.
President Yoon highlighted the importance of segregating educational processes based on types of disabilities, stating that this approach could be more effective in meeting educational needs. The deputy spokesperson reiterated that this visit was part of the government's effort to directly hear the voices from the special education frontlines and to strengthen the state's responsibility towards education for children with developmental disabilities.
