Court grants ICPC access to El-Rufai’s digital devices

A Nigerian court has permitted the ICPC to access digital devices linked to former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai as part of an investigation.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) permission to access and scrutinize electronic devices recovered from the residence of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai. The order was given by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik following an ex parte application presented by the ICPC’s counsel, Osuobeni Akponimisingha. This access is aimed at furthering the commission's investigation into allegations potentially related to El-Rufai's actions while in office.

The devices included in the ICPC’s request were confiscated during a search of El-Rufai’s home in Abuja, and the commission argued that examining these devices was crucial for gathering evidence. The court ruling allows the ICPC to analyze various forms of data on the devices, including public documents, WhatsApp chats, text messages, and call logs which may play a pivotal role in their investigation into corruption and misconduct allegations. The decision underscores the legal frameworks in place for tackling corruption in Nigeria, particularly as it relates to high-profile political figures.

This ruling may have implications for how corruption cases are pursued in the country, signaling a strong judicial stance on allowing anti-corruption agencies like the ICPC to effectively access necessary evidence. As investigations continue, the scrutiny on individuals like El-Rufai highlights ongoing issues related to governance and accountability in Nigeria, raising questions about the impact of political corruption on the public trust and the future of leadership in the nation.
