Wrocław Associate Professor, Who Lived Long in Tartu: Estonia Perceives Russian Threat More Clearly than Poland

A Wrocław professor argues that Estonia has a clearer understanding of the Russian threat compared to Poland, largely due to its direct border with Russia.

In a commentary on the political struggle in Poland regarding the EU's SAFE defense investment loans, Zdzisław Śliwa, an associate professor at the University of Wrocław and retired colonel, shares insights on how Estonia's perception of the Russian threat is significantly more acute than Poland's. He attributes this understanding to Estonia's geographical proximity to Russia, explaining that 'You have a border with Russia, while we only have a border with Kaliningrad and then Belarus.' This direct exposure allows Estonia to gauge the risks posed by Russia in a more pressing manner than Poland, which is currently preoccupied with internal political tensions that are affecting defense funding.
