Lulu Ranne responds to the proposal from the National Coalition Party representative - 'Ridiculous'

Lulu Ranne criticizes a proposal from a National Coalition Party representative regarding road maintenance in Finland, calling it 'ridiculous'.

In response to a proposal about maintaining multiple routes between two municipalities, Minister Lulu Ranne reacted strongly, labeling the suggestion as 'ridiculous'. The context of the discussion revolved around Finland's pressing need for economic adjustments, particularly concerning the condition of its roadways. Ranne emphasized the struggle to keep road infrastructure in good shape amid ongoing fiscal challenges.

During an interview, Ranne highlighted achievements in managing the backlog of road repairs and shared plans to significantly increase funding designated for basic road maintenance. Starting in 2030, it is projected that an additional 460 to 580 million euros will be allocated annually through the Traffic 12 funding program for basic road upkeep until 2037. This funding is critical for addressing the significant repair debts accumulated over time.

However, Ranne acknowledged a harsh reality, stating that it is unlikely Finland will ever reach a point where all roads are in perfect condition or where the repair backlog is completely eliminated. Given the constraints on budget and resources, Ranne noted that a pragmatic approach to road maintenance is necessary, focusing on ensuring that at least half of the infrastructure is maintained adequately. This highlights the ongoing issues within the Finnish transportation sector and the complexity of balancing fiscal responsibilities with the need for reliable infrastructure.
