Rahul Gandhi's Love for Kanshi Ram: Can Congress Snatch the Dalit Vote Bank?

Congress, under Rahul Gandhi, is planning to engage with Dalit voters by celebrating Kanshi Ram's legacy in a bid to reclaim lost ground in Uttar Pradesh.

The upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh are prompting political strategies to take shape ahead of time. The anniversary of Kanshi Ram, the founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party who raised political consciousness among Dalits and backward classes, is set for March 15. In this backdrop, Congress aims to leverage Kanshi Ram's legacy to regain its waning support base while attempting to encroach upon the Dalit vote bank traditionally held by Mayawati’s BSP.

To commemorate Kanshi Ram, Congress has organized an event at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow, titled 'Bahujan Samvad,' where opposition leader Rahul Gandhi is expected to engage in dialogue with Dalit and other backward class communities. During this interaction, he will reaffirm the commitment to advance Kanshi Ram's ideals and struggles. This initiative highlights Congress' strategy to reconnect with marginalized communities and regain some of its lost electoral ground in Uttar Pradesh.

In 2025, Congress celebrated Kanshi Ram's birth anniversary as a Dalit pride event, while this year marks a shift to commemorating it as a social change day. Through the 'Bahujan Samvad,' Rahul Gandhi aims to invigorate the agenda of social justice. However, the critical issue remains whether Congress can effectively penetrate Mayawati's entrenched Dalit vote bank, which poses a significant challenge for the party in its efforts to reclaim its political relevance in the state.
