Supreme Court Returns MBC ‘Choi Kyung-hwan ShillaGen Report’ Damages Suit... ‘Public Interest Recognized’
The South Korean Supreme Court overturned a lower court ruling that found MBC liable for damages related to a report on former Deputy Prime Minister Choi Kyung-hwan, acknowledging the report's public interest despite its inaccuracies.
The South Korean Supreme Court has reversed a lower court's decision that held Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) liable for damages in a lawsuit brought by former Deputy Prime Minister Choi Kyung-hwan. The case centered around a report broadcasted by MBC in April 2020, which alleged that Choi invested 500 million won in ShillaGen convertible bonds and that 6 billion won was invested by individuals connected to him. Choi claimed that the broadcast harmed his reputation, leading him to file a lawsuit seeking damages from MBC. Although the lower courts initially sided with him, awarding him damages, the Supreme Court recognized the report's public interest aspect.
