Itaewon Disaster Special Investigation Committee Decides to File a Complaint Against Former President Yoon Suk-yeol for Non-Attendance at Hearing
The Special Investigation Committee for the Itaewon disaster has decided to file a complaint against former President Yoon Suk-yeol for failing to attend a hearing.
The Special Investigation Committee (SIC) examining the Itaewon disaster has formally decided to file a complaint against former President Yoon Suk-yeol for his non-attendance at a crucial hearing meant to investigate the incident. The committee's chairman, Song Gi-chun, announced this decision after Yoon failed to appear, despite prior requests for his attendance. On October 13, during the afternoon session of the hearing, it was made clear that Yoon's absence had prompted the temporary assembly to take this step, revealing the committee's frustration over his lack of cooperation.
Earlier in the month, on October 3, Yoon had submitted a written excuse citing a court schedule as the reason for his absence. However, the committee attempted to accommodate him by requesting adjustments to the court schedule from the Seoul Central District Court, which were approved. Despite these efforts, Yoon remained uncooperative, denying requests for a visit from the committee at the Seoul Detention Center, where he is currently held. This repeated refusal highlights a growing tensions between the committee and Yoon's legal team, raising questions about accountability in the ongoing investigation.
Under the Itaewon Disaster Special Law, individuals summoned to hearings are legally obligated to attend and provide requested documentation unless they have a compelling reason for their absence. The law stipulates that failing to appear without a valid excuse could result in a penalty of up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won. The committee has already taken steps against other witnesses for non-compliance, reflecting its commitment to ensuring that all relevant individuals are held accountable in the investigation surrounding the tragic events of October 29, 2022, which left numerous casualties and raised significant concerns regarding public safety and emergency response protocols.
