The Greatest Pride in Poland. How "Balticovo" Expands Exports from the Czech Republic to New Zealand
Balticovo, a leading egg producer in Northern Europe, has achieved unicorn status by producing over a billion eggs annually and is now expanding its export markets globally.
Balticovo, one of the largest producers of eggs and egg products in Northern Europe, originated from a state poultry factory established in the early 1970s in Iecava, Latvia. After Latvia regained its independence in the early 1990s, Balticovo underwent privatization and reorganization into a joint-stock company, initiating a gradual modernization that allowed it to adapt to market economics. Over the next decades, the company invested heavily in production capacities, egg processing, and export strategies, positioning itself as a leader in the Baltic region.
According to Balticovo's board member Toms Auškāps and export manager Lauris Krastakalns, the company reached its “unicorn status” in the past year by surpassing the production of one billion eggs annually. They anticipate increasing this number to 1.5 billion in the coming years. A significant portion of the production is exported, and with production facilities also located outside of Latvia, Balticovo is not just exporting products but also expanding its brand presence internationally.
The implications of Balticovo's growth are substantial for the Latvian economy, as the company plays a crucial role in agricultural export and demonstrates successful adaptation to market demands. This expansion not only enhances the status of Latvian goods in foreign markets but also showcases successful business models originating from the Baltic states. With ongoing investments and an aim for further international integration, Balticovo symbolizes the potential for growth within the region's agricultural sector, boosting Latvia's competitive edge in the global egg production industry.
