Double Pricing for Boats at Chidorigafuchi, a Famous Cherry Blossom Spot; Increased Prices for Non-Residents

The Chiyoda Ward in Tokyo has introduced a double pricing system for boat rentals at the famous cherry blossom site Chidorigafuchi, raising prices for non-residents.

Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward has implemented a new pricing structure at the Chidorigafuchi boat rental service, a well-known cherry blossom viewing site. Starting March 1, non-residents will see an increase in rental prices due to inflation and increased demand from inbound tourism. Previously, boat rentals were set at 500 yen for 30 minutes during regular periods and 800 yen during the cherry blossom season; now, those prices are raised to 1,000 yen and 1,500 yen, respectively, for non-residents while the rates for residents remain unchanged. The Chidorigafuchi area, spanning approximately 700 meters and adorned with about 230 cherry trees, is recognized as one of Japan's premier cherry blossom spots. Established in 1950, this public facility attracts thousands of visitors, who enjoy rowing on the waters while taking in the breathtaking views of sakura during the spring season. The decision to implement different pricing for residents and non-residents aims to manage the increased financial pressures on local services and accommodate the growing number of tourists visiting the nation. As part of this new pricing framework, a ticket vending machine has been installed, allowing users to indicate their residency status before purchasing a ticket. This change reflects a broader trend of local governments adapting to tourism-related pressures and economic conditions while ensuring that local residents benefit from preferential rates at popular attractions. The move raises questions about accessibility for non-residents and may influence the number of visitors to the scenic area during peak seasons.
