200 families affected by floods after river overflow in Chone

At least 200 families have been affected by floods in Chone, Ecuador, caused by the overflow of rivers due to heavy rains.

In Chone, located in Manabí province, Ecuador, at least eight rural communities and two urban neighborhoods were impacted by severe floods that occurred on the night of March 11 and into the early morning of March 12. The heavy rainfall led to the overflowing of the Garrapata and Mosquito rivers, resulting in significant property damage and forcing dozens of families to evacuate their homes. Authorities have conducted preliminary assessments, confirming that around 200 families have been affected by the emergency.

The floodwaters and debris infiltrated numerous homes, with residents struggling to save their belongings while navigating the darkness and isolation caused by the rising waters. In particular, one shelter for 88 dogs in the area was also affected, contributing to the chaos as at least one pet remains missing. The local municipality has responded by implementing preventive evacuations in the most vulnerable sectors to safeguard lives and properties vulnerable to flooding.

The situation remains critical as the municipality continues to respond to the emergency, dealing with the impact of the floods which swept away large amounts of driftwood and debris, worsening conditions in several locations. Community efforts are underway to aid families affected by this disaster, and a focus on recovery and restoring normalcy is essential as they monitor ongoing weather conditions and potential risks.
