A Pole arrested for espionage at the Souda base
A 58-year-old Polish citizen has been arrested near the US naval base in Souda, Greece, on suspicion of espionage activities.
The authorities in Greece have heightened security measures around the US naval base at Souda following the arrest of a 58-year-old Polish man suspected of engaging in espionage. The individual was reportedly seen in the Marathia area near the entrance to Souda port, close to the naval facilities. Law enforcement officials suspect that he was using his mobile phone to record activities in the port area.
During his arrest, police from the Crime Suppression Unit of Chania seized both the suspect's mobile device and the trailer he was living in at the time. Investigations are set to take place early the next day, involving thorough checks of the vehicle and the mobile phone, supervised by a prosecutor. The objective of these searches is to gather all materials the suspect may have compiled during his stay in the area.
This incident raises concerns about national security and the potential for espionage activities in regions housing foreign military bases. Such events contribute to ongoing tensions surrounding issues of security in strategic maritime locations, especially in light of geopolitical dynamics in the Mediterranean region.
