Sony has quietly tested a new pricing method - One thing was forgotten
Sony is testing a dynamic pricing strategy on its PlayStation Store that adjusts game prices based on consumer purchasing behavior.
Sony is currently conducting a quiet test of a new dynamic pricing strategy for its PlayStation Store, which sets game prices according to the purchasing habits of consumers. This trial is being run across more than 70 regions, including several in Europe, and encompasses a selection of 190 games. Information provided by PSprices, who identified the ongoing test, indicates that it has been underway since at least November 2025, with no official announcement from Sony. Among the games included are notable titles from Sony’s own AAA range and popular releases from developers like 2K Games, Focus Entertainment, Deep Silver, Bethesda, and Rockstar Games.
The dynamic pricing strategy sees some games offered at lower prices for certain users, while others may experience higher prices. This approach aims to ascertain how much consumers are willing to pay for specific games, potentially fine-tuning Sony’s pricing model in response to user behavior. Such practices represent a shift towards more personalized pricing strategies in the gaming industry, mirroring trends observed in other sectors such as retail and travel.
However, concerns over consumer protection have been raised regarding this pricing strategy. Siiri Pusztai, a leading expert from the Competition and Consumer Authority, communicated via email that while consumer protection laws do not outright forbid dynamic pricing, there are complex considerations regarding fairness and transparency in how prices are adjusted. The implications of this strategy could lead to scrutiny over fairness and potential implications for gamers, particularly in regard to perceived value and pricing integrity in the digital marketplace.
