New ship boarded by the Coast Guard
The Swedish Coast Guard has boarded a vessel suspected of sailing under a false flag while heading toward Russia.
On Thursday evening, the Swedish Coast Guard boarded a new ship from the Russian shadow fleet known as the Sea Owl I, which is 228 meters long and listed on the EU sanctions list. The operation took place in the waters near Trelleborg around 8:30 PM. The boarding also involved the national task force of the police and a helicopter, indicating the significance of the operation due to the vessel's questionable shipping practices.
The Sea Owl I is suspected of sailing under a false flag from the small island nation of Comoros in the Indian Ocean. It has been reported that the ship has transported oil in recent years between Russia and Brazil. At the time of interception, it was en route from the Brazilian port of Santos to the Russian port of Primorsk, raising further suspicions about its operations, particularly its cargo status as it was seemingly empty at the time of the boarding.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the vessel's activities; the situation mirrors a similar operation that took place the previous week, according to Mattias Lindholm from the Coast Guard. There has been no confirmation regarding any arrests made during the operation. This incident highlights ongoing concerns over maritime security and the enforcement of sanctions against Russian maritime activities amid geopolitical tensions.
