The former Miss Orán will spend seven years in prison for drug trafficking

Former Miss Orán, Martina Oliva, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for her involvement in transporting 15 kilograms of marijuana.

Martina Oliva, a former beauty queen from Orán, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for her role in drug trafficking. The Federal Oral Court (TOF) No. 1 in Salta found sufficient evidence to establish her involvement in transporting 15 kilograms of marijuana. The court also sentenced her partner, Joaquín Tolaba, to ten years in prison for the same offense.

During the trial, Oliva's defense argued that she was a 'victim of love,' suggesting that her involvement in the crime was coerced. However, Judge María Alejandra Cataldi dismissed this argument, asserting that it was reminiscent of outdated narratives that overlook the empowerment women have gained in recent times. The judges emphasized the need to hold Oliva accountable for her actions, rejecting the notion that her gender or relationships could mitigate her responsibility in the drug trafficking case.

Despite the conviction, Oliva will remain under house arrest until the sentence becomes final. The court has also ordered the confiscation of her vehicle, a Toyota Hiace. This case has drawn attention to issues of drug trafficking in Argentina, especially how societal perceptions around women's roles play into legal defenses in criminal cases.
