USP determines the dismissal of professor accused of harassing students in the interior of SP
The University of São Paulo has fired professor José Maurício Rosolen following allegations of sexual harassment against postgraduate students at its Ribeirão Preto campus.
The University of São Paulo (USP) announced on Thursday, September 12th, the dismissal of professor José Maurício Rosolen after allegations of sexual harassment of postgraduate students in the Chemistry department at the Ribeirão Preto campus surfaced from 2021 to 2024. This decision was made by the board of the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters (FFCLRP), where Rosolen worked, following a recommendation from the university's Attorney General's Office, which concluded an administrative process against him.
In addition to terminating his employment, the university has instructed that the case against Rosolen be referred to the Civil Police again. The Civil Police had previously completed an investigation into the allegations, which was reported to the Justice system in September 2025, according to the State Secretary for Public Security (SSP-SP). However, the São Paulo Court of Justice (TJ-SP) reported that the case is currently under secrecy, indicating that the details are not publicly available due to the sensitivity of the situation.
Despite being suspended for a year due to allegations of moral and sexual harassment by former students, José Maurício Rosolen had returned to teaching duties at USP before this latest decision was reached. This case raises important concerns regarding the safety and well-being of students in educational institutions and highlights the necessity for universities to enforce strict policies against harassment and protect their students.
