To accelerate the energy transition... 'Lower public transport fares and increase electric vehicle subsidies'

The South Korean government is urged to use its recent oil price cap not only for price stability but also as a catalyst for energy transition and security by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting renewable energy.

In response to the recent implementation of an oil price cap by the South Korean government, experts assert that this issue should not be viewed merely through the lens of price stability. There is a pressing need to simultaneously advance energy security, by decreasing reliance on fluctuating fossil fuel markets, and achieve a transition towards renewable energy sources. President Lee Jae-myung has emphasized the urgency of accelerating this energy transition during a recent cabinet meeting, highlighting the importance of this critical juncture for South Korea's energy policy.

Currently, fossil fuels make up an overwhelming 80.9% of South Korea's energy mix, with oil alone constituting 39.2%, which underscores the vulnerability of the nation's economy to international fluctuations in oil supply and geopolitical tensions. The Prime Minister suggested that measures must be taken to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, particularly through substantial modifications in transportation systems, which account for a significant portion of oil consumption. By potentially modeling initiatives such as Germany’s successful '9 Euro Ticket' for public transport, South Korea could significantly lower transportation costs to boost public transit usage and facilitate a transition towards cleaner energy alternatives.

Additionally, the government has set a goal to have 50% of new vehicles be zero-emission by 2030. Experts recommend not only accelerating this initiative but also temporarily increasing subsidies for electric vehicles. As energy consumption from gas and fossil fuels remains high, further efforts to diversify the energy supply and increase the share of renewable resources, such as solar power, are essential to create a more sustainable energy framework that could alleviate costs for citizens and enhance energy stability.
