Sparta could have conceded five, yet still brings great hope from Alkmaar thanks to Surovčík

Sparta Prague lost 1-2 to AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of their Conference League round of 16 match, but goalkeeper Jakub Surovčík's performance gave them hopes for the return leg.

In the opening match of the UEFA Conference League round of 16, Sparta Prague faced a challenging game against AZ Alkmaar, ultimately losing 1-2. The match saw Troy Parrott give the Dutch side the lead, but Sparta's Matyáš Vojta equalized shortly after halftime with his first competitive goal for the club. However, Parrott scored again in the 87th minute, sealing the victory for Alkmaar and deepening Sparta's recent struggle, which now counts only one win in their last five competitive matches.

Sparta's performance can be attributed in large part to the heroics of their goalkeeper, Jakub Surovčík, whose crucial saves prevented the scoreline from being even worse. Overall, the team appears to be undergoing a rough patch, as they have not won away from home in their last four attempts. With the return leg set to take place in Prague, there is still hope for Sparta to turn their fortunes around and advance in the tournament.

The upcoming match at Letná stadium, scheduled for next week, will be critical for Sparta's ambitions in the Conference League. If they manage to overcome Alkmaar, they will face either Lech Poznań or Shakhtar Donetsk in the quarterfinals. Shakhtar performed well in their first leg, winning 3-1 away, placing additional pressure on Sparta to deliver a strong home performance for a potential upset and continued competition in Europe.
