Itamaraty says Trump advisor's meeting with Bolsonaro may be 'improper interference' in the country's internal matters
Brazil's Foreign Ministry claims that a meeting between a Trump advisor and jailed former President Bolsonaro could be seen as improper interference in Brazil's internal affairs.
Brazil's Foreign Ministry, or Itamaraty, has expressed concerns to the Supreme Federal Court (STF) regarding a meeting scheduled between Darren Beattie, a senior advisor to former President Donald Trump, and Jair Bolsonaro, the former president currently incarcerated. The Ministryβs comments suggest that this meeting may constitute an unwarranted interference in Brazil's domestic affairs, a significant assertion given the current political climate following Bolsonaro's conviction for his involvement in the 2022 coup attempt.
The meeting was requested by Bolsonaro's defense team, aiming to secure a visit from Beattie while he serves a 27-year prison sentence for his part in the coup attempt that took place at the 19th Military Police Battalion in the Federal District. Minister Alexandre de Moraes, overseeing Bolsonaro's case, had to grant permission for any visits, which underscores the complexities of legal and political dynamics surrounding Bolsonaro's detention.
On March 10, the defense sought permission for the visit and the Ministry has now disclosed that it will take place on the 18th, albeit on a different date than originally requested. These developments highlight ongoing tensions related to Bolsonaro's legal challenges and potential influences from foreign entities, raising questions about the integrity of Brazil's political processes and the implications of international relationships post-Bolsonaro.
