Women Tell: This is Why I Left My Husband

A survey reveals that many women in Finland cite their husband's alcohol use and infidelity as common reasons for divorce.

In a recent survey conducted by Iltalehti, over 500 Finnish men responded to questions about their relationship breakups, revealing that 50% had been left by their partners. A significant portion, 31%, admitted to leaving their partners, while the remaining 19% stated that the decision was mutual. This indicates a prevalent issue in Finnish society regarding relationship dynamics, particularly highlighting women's roles in initiating breakups.

Heli Vaaranen, a psychotherapist and leading expert at Väestöliitto, commented that the survey findings were not surprising. According to research, women are statistically more likely to initiate divorce proceedings compared to men. The data underscores societal norms that may lead women to feel more empowered to make such decisions, especially in cases involving significant issues like alcohol abuse and infidelity.

Among the reasons shared by women for leaving their husbands, alcohol consumption and unfaithfulness ranked at the top. Other contributing factors included unequal division of household chores and sexual problems, both of which contribute to dissatisfaction in relationships. The findings suggest a need for better communication and support systems within marriages to address these concerns before they lead to irreparable distance between partners.
