Energy cutoff due to non-existent debt generates compensation in MG

A Brazilian consumer was compensated for moral damages after being unfairly charged for a non-existent debt by the power company Cemig, resulting in a week-long power cut.

A consumer in Monte Azul, Northern Minas Gerais, has been awarded R$ 8,000 in moral damages after being wrongfully charged by the Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (Cemig) for an alleged debt that did not exist. This situation arose when a company employee inspected the consumer's residence without their presence and subsequently replaced the energy meter. Following this inspection, the consumer received a bill claiming a discrepancy in energy consumption between 2021 and 2023, amounting to R$ 3,146.64, which the consumer disputed.
