Council approves the creation of an emergency cabinet in the city hall of Macapá with 13 votes
The Municipal Chamber of Macapá approved the establishment of an Emergency Administrative and Financial Cabinet to ensure essential services following recent administrative upheaval.
On Thursday, the Municipal Chamber of Macapá approved a bill to create an Emergency Administrative and Financial Cabinet for the local government. This initiative, led by interim Mayor Pedro DaLua, received significant support with 13 votes in favor against 6 opposed. The newly formed cabinet will oversee the city's finances and ensure that critical services in health, education, construction, and staff payments continue unabated amid recent political turmoil.
The decision to establish this emergency response team comes in the wake of the suspension of two mayors, Dr. Furlan and Mário Neto, who are under investigation for alleged fraud in the bidding process related to the Municipal General Hospital's construction. The political environment became unstable when Dr. Furlan announced his resignation, coinciding with the investigation's revelation, as he shifted his focus to a gubernatorial pre-campaign.
Interim Mayor DaLua has expressed grievances about the lack of transition documents from the previous administration, claiming he received the office in disarray. The recent cabinet formation indicates a proactive approach to restore order and functionality within Macapá's municipal government, ensuring that essential city services can be maintained during this challenging period.
