Ukrainians who ran 'premium' migrant smuggling service to UK jailed
Two Ukrainian men have been sentenced to prison for operating a migrant smuggling service that charged up to 15,000 euros per person to transport individuals to the UK.
Two Ukrainian men, Oleksandr Yavtushenko, 43, and Vladyslav Cherniavskyi, 38, have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in a premium migrant smuggling service that operated across the English Channel. They were sentenced to five and six years respectively for assisting unlawful immigration. The service, described as a 'bespoke taxi service,' charged migrants exorbitant fees of up to 15,000 euros each for the perilous journey to the UK.
The men were arrested when their yacht, named Uforia, was intercepted about four-and-a-half miles off the coast of Chichester, Sussex, on 20 July of the previous year. During the interception, authorities discovered five migrants on board, including four men from Albania and a very young female from Vietnam. The National Crime Agency took over the case, and the migrants were promptly handed to immigration authorities for processing.
The prosecution highlighted that Yavtushenko and Cherniavskyi had conducted at least eight successful crossings before their arrest, emphasizing the organized nature of their operation. Their sentences reflect the UKβs ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and unlawful immigration, signaling severe consequences for those who exploit vulnerable individuals seeking a better life through dangerous means.
