Russians want to play hockey with Slovaks and Hungarians in Moscow. No negotiations are ongoing, says SZĽH

Russia's hockey officials Express an interest in organizing matches with the Slovak and Hungarian national teams in Moscow, but the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation denies any ongoing negotiations.

Russian hockey officials, represented by Roman Rotenberg, vice president of the Russian ice hockey federation, have expressed a desire for international matches featuring the Slovak and Hungarian hockey teams to be held in Moscow. Rotenberg mentioned in Russian media outlets that there has been communication not only with the Slovak Hockey Federation but also with their Hungarian counterparts, referring to political alignments with these countries as a potential motivation for the matches. Despite these claims, the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation (SZĽH) has firmly denied that any such discussions are currently taking place.

Miroslav Šatan, president of the SZĽH, reflected on the complexities surrounding the situation regarding the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) in a recent podcast, emphasizing that the federation has handled the challenges well over time. He reiterated the federation's apolitical stance while also acknowledging the support from politicians across the spectrum for the national team during the Olympics, suggesting a united front in the face of external pressures.

The prospects of revitalizing international hockey events in Moscow raise questions about the political climate surrounding sports in the region. With ongoing tensions in Eastern Europe, the motivations behind Russia's outreach to Slovakia and Hungary could extend beyond sports, reflecting deeper political strategies. The situation remains fluid as both federations navigate their positions amid international scrutiny and the broader implications of sports diplomacy.
