To protect your clothes, stop leaving water in the iron immediately!
Experts warn that leaving water in a steam iron can cause damage that reduces its efficiency and lifespan.
Many users tend to finish ironing their clothes and immediately store the iron without emptying the water reservoir, mistakenly believing this is harmless. However, home care experts caution that leaving water in a steam iron can lead to gradual damage, ultimately diminishing its effectiveness and shortening its lifespan. Even a small amount of water left inside the reservoir can leak through the steam holes, potentially discoloring the metal base and corroding the internal parts over time.
In addition to affecting the iron itself, neglecting to empty the water reservoir can cause another issue: it may clog the steam holes or allow water to leak inside, which weakens the iron's performance and makes ironing less effective. Proper maintenance suggests users should fully drain the water tank after each use and allow the iron to cool completely before storing it.
Another undesirable consequence of leaving water in the iron is the possibility of stains appearing on clothes during ironing. Over time, minerals or impurities can accumulate within the reservoir and steam holes; when the iron heats up, these residues may release with the steam or water droplets, leaving unsightly yellow marks on garments.
