Police in Minas Gerais initiated an operation targeting illegal gun production using 3D printing technology in several metropolitan cities.
The Civil Police of Minas Gerais (PCMG) conducted search and seizure warrants on Thursday, focusing on Belo Horizonte, Betim, and São José da Lapa, as part of Operation Shadowgun. This operation aims to dismantle an interstate scheme that facilitates the illegal production and sale of firearms manufactured through 3D printing technology. Although specific details regarding Minas Gerais' involvement in the scheme were not disclosed, it is evident that the investigation is part of a larger crackdown on the growing issue of 3D-printed weapons, which pose significant public safety concerns.
The investigation is primarily led by the Civil Police and the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ). In the course of the operation, four men were apprehended, including the alleged leader of the criminal group, who was located in Rio das Pedras, São Paulo. The Brazilian authorities executed five arrest warrants and 36 search and seizure warrants across São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and an additional nine states, indicating the extensive reach of this illegal operation. All those sought for arrest have been formally charged by the MPRJ, reflecting the seriousness of the criminal activities associated with this case.
The targeted locations for these warrants also include significant states like Bahia, Espírito Santo, and Goiás, suggesting a widespread network involved in the production of 3D-printed firearms.
