Unemployment Benefit from April 1: Will Be Able to Receive Alimony, Dividends, Money from Tenants

Starting April 1, unemployment benefits will not be revoked for individuals receiving alimony, dividends, or rent payments.

Starting April 1, 2024, the Latvian government will implement changes allowing individuals receiving unemployment benefits to also accept alimony, dividends, and money from renters without having their benefits revoked. This policy change aims to alleviate financial pressure on unemployed individuals, considering that a significant portion of the population may derive income from these sources while still actively seeking employment. The Ministry of Welfare highlights that the primary responsibility of unemployed individuals is to seek work, which these changes are designed to facilitate.

The government estimates that the new regulations will only impact around 2% of the unemployed population, suggesting that the majority will not be significantly affected by this update. There are reassurances from the State Social Insurance Agency (VSAA) indicating that not all transactions entering an unemployed person's bank account will be scrutinized; the focus will primarily be on funds linked to self-employed activities and for which social insurance contributions have been made. This approach intends to streamline the benefit process and ensure that individuals are supported while they seek new job opportunities.

Last year, the government disbursed nearly 190 million euros in unemployment benefits, underscoring the financial burden of unemployment in Latvia. As these changes roll out, the Ministry of Welfare is optimistic that they will reduce stress among unemployed individuals and prevent further adjustments that may negatively impact beneficiaries in the future. This aligns with the government’s broader goal of promoting labor market activity and supporting individuals during their job search efforts.
