Bus driver can soon call for help with a button press in Lahti - threats are part of drivers' daily life
Lahti's public transport plans to install emergency buttons in 50 buses to enhance safety for drivers and passengers amid rising threats.
Lahti Regional Transport is set to install emergency buttons in 50 buses, allowing drivers to alert security personnel in potentially dangerous situations. This initiative is expected to be implemented within the year and aims to increase the safety of both drivers and passengers who have faced alarming incidents.
The area supervisor for the city of Lahti, Niina Savolainen, noted that disturbances on buses are frequent, particularly caused by intoxicated individuals or people who may behave aggressively without clear reasons. Drivers often find themselves in vulnerable positions during such disturbances as they limit their ability to manage situations effectively and call for help when needed.
With real-time tracking of bus routes, security personnel will be able to respond quickly, knowing precisely where to meet the driver, especially at the next stop after an emergency button is pressed. This long-anticipated security enhancement comes following requests from drivers who seek greater protection during their routes, reflecting an ongoing concern regarding their safety while on duty.
