This year's 'focus country' at the Lisbon Animation Festival is Latvia

Latvia has been chosen as the focus country for the 2026 Monstra Animation Festival in Lisbon, highlighting the country's rich artistic freedom and animation techniques.

The Monstra Animation Festival, established in 2000, has become the most attended film festival in Portugal, featuring approximately 400 films selected from 3,000 submissions annually. Each year, the festival selects a 'focus country' for its program, and organizers plan this choice two or three years in advance. Notably, Latvia was selected as the focus country for 2026, a decision made even before Ginta Zilbaloža's famous film 'Straume' premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. This choice underscores Latvia's growing reputation in international animation circles.

The festival characterizes Latvian animation as having a "strong sense of artistic freedom, a wide spectrum of animation techniques, and the dominance of authorial cinema." This reflects the diverse and innovative nature of the animation being produced in Latvia, showcasing its unique voice and creativity on a global stage. The focus on Latvia also provides an opportunity for local animators to gain international exposure, highlighting their work to a broader audience.

During the opening ceremony on March 12, two renowned short films by Latvian authors were featured: Anete Melece's "Kiosk" (2013) and Vladimir Leščov's "Wings and Oars" (2007). The participation of these filmmakers in various festival juries and their involvement in animation workshops emphasizes the collaborative spirit of Monstra and the commitment to fostering connections between artists and audiences. As Latvia takes the spotlight, the festival serves as a significant platform for showcasing the country's animation talent and cultural contributions.
