Victim died in flames after robbery in Lahti – court releases two men from murder convictions

A Finnish court has overturned murder convictions for two men involved in a robbery that led to a victim's death by fire, although they received sentences for serious robbery and neglect of rescue operations.

In a recent ruling by the Eastern Finland Court of Appeal, two men, aged 35 and 64, had their murder convictions from a homicide case that occurred in Lahti in the summer of 2024 overturned. This decision came after it was determined that there was insufficient evidence to prove that the men had participated in starting the fires that ultimately caused the victim's death due to smoke inhalation. However, the court still sentenced these men to 2 years and 11 months in prison for neglecting rescue operations and committing a serious robbery. The incident involved a violent robbery during which the victim was assaulted with a glass hammer before the fire was set, showcasing the brutal nature of the crime. The appeals court maintained the convictions of two other men, aged 36 and 37, for murder and serious robbery, upholding their prison sentence of 11 years and 3 months. In the backdrop of this case, the Päijät-Häme District Court had originally ruled in March 2025. The overturning of the convictions and the sentencing highlights critical issues regarding accountability and the legal thresholds required to prove participation in a crime that leads to severe outcomes, such as in this tragic case of a life lost during a robbery gone wrong.
