Complete Reform of the Nuclear Energy Law Enabling Small Nuclear Reactors Submitted to Parliament
The Finnish government has submitted a proposal for a comprehensive reform of the nuclear energy law aimed at facilitating the use of small nuclear reactors while ensuring safety and responsible waste management.
The Finnish government has introduced a new nuclear energy law proposal to Parliament, which spans over 550 pages and aims to replace the current legislation alongside the amendment of 14 related laws, including those pertinent to radiation and criminal matters. The core objective of this reform is to align the use of nuclear energy with the overall benefit of society, ensuring safety in operations and responsible management of nuclear waste produced in Finland. It intends to support the implementation of new small nuclear power plants within the country.
Minister of the Environment and Climate, Sari Multala, stated that this legislative change will enable various nuclear plant project execution concepts while improving risk management for project developers. Additionally, it aims to enhance investment security related to nuclear projects and facilitate access to funding for these investments. Such developments are essential in ensuring that nuclear power production does not contribute to the proliferation of nuclear weapons, reinforcing the government's commitment to responsible nuclear energy use.
The reform signifies a significant shift in Finlandโs approach to nuclear energy, reflecting growing interest in small modular reactors as a clean and reliable energy source. As Europe moves towards sustainable energy solutions, this legislative update could potentially position Finland as a leader in innovative nuclear technology deployment, which may attract investment and collaboration in the energy sector.
