A Warning Siren Suddenly Sounded in Kaunas: What Happened?
Residents in Kaunas reported hearing warning sirens without prior notice due to a technical check on one siren.
Residents in Kaunas experienced alarm when warning sirens sounded suddenly in the Kalniečių micro-district, with reports surfacing from multiple locals. Many were taken aback, noting that they had not received any prior alerts regarding the siren's activation, leading to concern among the community. Social media quickly filled with comments from individuals sharing their experiences, revealing a shared sense of unease throughout the city.
Eglė Ruchajienė, a spokesperson for the Kaunas Fire and Rescue Department, clarified the situation, explaining that the siren alarm was part of a technical check on one of the city's warning sirens located on Savanorių Avenue. During such checks, there is no advance notice given to residents, and the siren's sound is only activated for a brief period—specifically, around ten seconds—to test its functionality. This procedure is standard practice and is necessary to ensure that the warning systems are operational in case of emergencies.
The technical check was conducted by specialists from the Kaunas municipality, which is responsible for maintaining the city's warning systems. This incident highlighted the importance of effective communication between city officials and residents regarding testing and maintenance of emergency systems, as the unexpected nature of the siren activation caused unnecessary alarm within the community.
