Rains in Guayaquil: Boy found dead after falling into sewer in Flor de Bastión
An 11-year-old boy tragically drowned after falling into an open sewer during heavy rains in Guayaquil's Flor de Bastión neighborhood.
On the evening of March 11, heavy rainfall in Guayaquil caused severe flooding in various areas, leading to a tragic incident where an 11-year-old boy fell into an open sewer in the Flor de Bastión neighborhood. The rainfall was vigorous enough to displace the cover of the sewer, creating an unforeseen hazard for local residents. At the time of the incident, several children were playing in the vicinity when the boy fell into the sewer.
The Potable Water and Sewage Company (Emapag) reported that the intense pressure from the rainwater surge caused the shifting of the sewer cover, which contributed to the accident. Emergency responders, including firefighters, Segura EP, Interagua, and Emapag, quickly mobilized to the site to conduct a search and rescue operation for the trapped boy. The rescue team utilized a tripod system, ropes, thermal cameras, and motion sensors in an effort to locate the child in the darkened sewer system.
As the operation progressed, information was released by the fire units, detailing their efforts to locate the boy. However, as the situation unfolded, it became clear that this incident would highlight the need for improved urban infrastructure and safety measures in areas prone to flooding, particularly regarding the maintenance and security of sewer systems. The tragic loss of the young boy has left a profound impact on the community, raising concerns about safety during heavy rainfall events and the city's preparedness for such natural phenomena.
